Project Overview
Transparent grading standard, unify quality of driving lessons.

Progress System
Grading System is a crucial feature which provides unify standard of grading. There are several competences in leaning how to drive a car. We use the lesson card made by Verjo (Driving School) based on CBR standard.

My Contributions
I initiate the interviews and with the help from the sales team, manage to test the content of our lesson card competences, and the usability test in early process. Collaborating closely with the developers, I conduct a short online brainstorming session and come up with design solution. I design the UI graphics and UX proposal with new approach of slide presenting the screens based on scenario and timeline.
Why do we need this function?
Driving industry has uneven quality of driving lesson. To be able to set a standard which is in our vision of improving this situation, grading system plays a crucial role. It allows the student to have its lesson card saved digitally also lighten up the complexity of switching instructor.

Problem
↓ The current version we were using now shows competencies not competence which sets an unavoidably vague grading standard.
↓ Instructors use different grading cards, from 14-55 units. Some instructors grade students per lesson that includes several competences, some use competences per units. Hard for student to track their progress or fully understand what they learned.

Solution
↑ Clickdrive provides a lesson card functions to help students to track their progress.
↑ Grading system uses the competences of standard lesson card based on CBR's suggestions to unify the progress standard.
We conducted research to understand instructors and identify the common problem of use of lesson cards. In addition to learning about instructors lesson cards, we needed to learn more about their grading process.

Lesson cards review
Research revealed a huge issue with various ways how an instructor schedule their lessons. They have no idea what the students already learned because instructors construct their lessons in different ways which is based on competencies not single skill, EX

Driving on the road (unclear competence) can include:
-right turn
-left turn
or
-parking
-driving straight

Semi-structured Interviews
In addition to secondary research, I conducted interviews with instructors to understand the scope of their responsibilities and their grading behaviours. We wanted to learn about their teaching journey in addition to their lesson quality and communications between students.

An Instructor's Story
During our research phase we met an instructor who is passionate and serious about the quality of driving lesson. He spoke of the changing of the driving lesson industry due to technology and safety awareness. The grading and schedule software used varies from individual instructor's choice.

Insight
• Instructors need to test again the scores on student's lesson cards when they get new students, the grading standards are different, so they need to test several criteria.
• Instructor community also has huge debates about the standards, they are adding up the criteria.
• Some instructors only give grading after several lessons.
• Instructors need to right down lesson dates of what they taught
• Learning curve of students helps instructors to schedule length of different phases.

Our Approach
1. Research & Testing
2. Design
From students, we called, we understand that the student is in a passive role since for them the driving lesson industry is new, and they need time to understand their right. The average age of students are between 17-19. Based on our communications with the student, we decide to focus on the flow of instructors. And for student we use wording and visual solutions such as notification and game like visual.

Site Map: Instructor site map
After user testing and solidifying 3 key user flows for our app, we created a site map to visualize the architecture for our product.

User Flows: Instructor
We identified 2 critical moments for this grading feature and create a timeline to understand how a user will navigate through the lesson, and to identify the design work needed to support the tasks users need to perform.

High-end Solution
We decide to keep the lesson card editing opens for the instructor 24 hours within the lesson: Students are the owner of the lesson cards BUT Instructors might edit the lesson card throughout the whole lesson several times even after the lesson.

Our Approach
1. Research & Testing
2. Design
  • Product Architect
Learning from previous built and communication, I made scenario flow and video exhibiting the interaction and movements.
